A pergola filters light and frames the space; a pavilion gives you a real roof, a fan, lights and a reason to stay out when the sky opens. Ours are heavy timber, sized to look permanent because they are, standing on stone clad masonry columns that tie the structure to the patio, kitchen and fireplace around it.
The reason our pavilions look grown from the project rather than dropped on it is that the columns, footings and patio go in as one design. Fireplace at the gable end, kitchen island along the side, lighting in the trusses, the structure is the frame of the whole room.
Pergola for light and definition, pavilion for weather and evenings. If the dream includes a TV, a fan or dinner during a thunderstorm, that is a pavilion. If it is dappled shade over a bar, that is a pergola. Budgets differ accordingly, and we will show you both against your yard.
Roofed structures typically do, and rules differ by county across the Baltimore area. We handle the drawings and process as part of the project, it is paperwork we do every month, and it goes smoother when the builder submits it.
Often, yes, the deciding question is footings. Columns need real foundations, and we can usually cut them into an existing patio cleanly. We will tell you upfront if the existing surface is not worth saving.
